Audi has been confirmed as the second sponsor of the Louis Vuitton Trophy, as anticipated by NBR in a report last month.
Audi will take over from BMW as an official partner of the regatta, which begins on March 9 on the Waitemata Harbour in Auckland.
Audi would not disclose how much the sponsorship would cost the company when asked by NBR.
In 2008, Audi pulled its sponsorship from Team Germany that effectively ended the sailing team’s bid to win the 2010 America’s Cup. At the time Audi blamed the worldwide credit crunch for its decision.
But things are looking up for the luxury car manufacturer. Audi New Zealand general manager Dane Fisher said the company was delighted to be sponsoring the event and, like many of its customers, was passionate about yachting.
Mr Dane said the Trophy showcased many of the qualities Audi stands for such as “innovation, design and performance".
“We respect and admire the need to constantly push technical boundaries and perform at the highest level. We see great synergies between Audi and the Louis Vuitton Trophy and are delighted to be associated with such as acclaimed global event,” Mr Fisher said.
Louis Vuitton Trophy spokesman Bruno Trouble said Audi’s sponsorship would help make the Auckland leg of the competition a reality. “There is a very nice fit between Audi, Louis Vuitton and the best sailing in the world," he said.
Audi also sponsors the Audi Med Cup and Audi Hamilton Island Race week.
