Australia to slash immigration levels

New Govt plan comes after a record 510,000 people migrated to Australia in 2023, putting pressure on housing but keeping the country out of recession.

High immigration levels are unpopular although the business lobby has advocated for a 'Big Australia'.

The Albanese Government’s migration strategy, released yesterday, was many months in the making and was always on the Government’s ‘to do’ list but it arrived in the middle of a renewed debate about immigration and the relative merits of the concept of a ‘Big Australia’.
