Martin Devlin

Joining NBR as sports columnist in February 2022, Martin Devlin brings decades of experience reporting and broadcasting on sport for major media organisations in New Zealand and overseas.

His career began in radio in the late 1980s after graduating from the Broadcasting School in Christchurch and took off as a protégé of media entrepreneur, and future Finance Minister, Steven Joyce.

Named RBA Sports Broadcaster of the Year nine times, most recently in 2020, Devlin has been a regular contributor to NZ Rugby World and Sky TV’s Rugby Centre. He also hosted TV One’s coverage of the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, and the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

“I love the emotion of sport,” he says.

“I love how it brings us together in collective experience. The celebration and joy of victory, the shared emotional pain and anguish when we watch our beloved teams lose.”

“Sport, for me, is also business – big business.”
