Vodafone NZ has refreshed its RIM BlackBerry range with the Curve 9360 ($599), which weighs in at a featherweight 99g (to an iPhone 4S’ 137g) and is just 11mm deep, but boasts a faster processor and better display than its predecessor.

The new Curve also features a 5 mega-pixel digital camera, wi-fi, GPS, version 7 of the BlackBerry OS and – yes – a good old fashioned physical keypad.

Like all BlackBerries now, it comes pre-loaded with Messenger, and can be used as a fully functional smartphone without the need to buy a monthly subscription to BlackBerry’s service.

'Best BlackBerry ever'
The Curve 9360 joins the recently added BlackBerry Bold 9900 ($1199), which features both a 2.8-inch touchscreen and traditional keypad.

The Bold 9900’s features a brushed metal case, BlackBerry OS 7, a 1.2MHz processor, a 5 megapixel camera and a generous (by BlackBerry standards 8GB of onboard memory, expandable to 32GB via an SD card).

The New York Times’ influential David Pogue called the Bold 9900 “the best BlackBerry ever,” although his review also included a laundry list of RIM’s recent commercial problems and mis-steps with other products, making it, on balance, a grimacing read for the company.

RIM said Telecom will add the 9900 “in the coming months.” 2degrees' network does not support full BlackBerry service.

While it awaits review units of the new models, NBR’s favourite in RIM’s line up remains the BlackBerry Torch, which features a touchscreen that hides a slide-down keyboard.

For those not swept up in the hype, BlackBerries retain advantages in key areas including security and data efficiency. And, of course, some people like the feel of physical keys.
