The National Party has announced its shortlist of five candidates for the Epsom electorate in the November 26 general election.
On July 18 it will make its final selection from Aaron Bhatnagar (who tried and failed to land a spot in the Botany byelection), Paul Goldsmith, Denise Krum, Ewen McQueen and Richard Simpson.
The winner of that contest will go up against former Auckland mayor John Banks, who is standing for the ACT Party.
The seat is held by Rodney Hide, who was ousted from ACT's leadership by Don Brash.
Act needs to win the seat again to survive in Parliament, unless there is a stunning revival in its poll rating.
Its rating is under 2 percent in recent surveys and it would have to pass 5 percent to get seats in Parliament without winning an electorate.
National is again likely to give the seat to ACT by campaigning mainly for the party vote in Epsom so it has a support partner in Parliament.
