Bank of New Zealand is chasing what it sees as a growing sector - the iwi market - with the appointment of a Maori business head.

The bank says the appointment of Pierre Tohe’s strengthens a relationship which already includes funding and financial advice for Maori business in agribusiness, commercial property and geothermal infrastructure.

According to Te Puni Kokiri the total asset base of the 2010 Maori economy was $36.9billion – up from $20 billion from 2005-6.

“We believe Maori business interests in New Zealand are set for a period of substantial growth,” BNZ institutional banking head Shelley Ruha says.

Mr Tohe has been with the bank for eight years. He is also involved in the New Zealand Maori Law Society.
