Broadcaster Kevin Black dies
Legendary Radio Hauraki DJ dies suddenly of a suspected heart attack, days short of his 70th birthday.
Veteran DJ Kevin Black (69) died suddenly of a suspected heart attack at his Remuera home last night.
Radio Hauraki, the one-time pirate station where Mr Black enjoyed the highest profile phase of his career, announced on its website: "RIP Kevin Black, a true legend of broadcasting. We owe you."
During the 1980s, the Rolls Royce-driving "Blackie" was the highest-paid DJ in the country. His breakfast show on Hauraki, known for his prank calls, had a long run at the top of the ratings (it was eventually edged into second place by Newstalk ZB after it launched the Paul Holmes' breakfast show).
Mr Black retired in 2009 after stints at 89FM (which he co-founded after leaving Hauraki), Classic Hits and Solid Gold FM.
He is survived by a wife and three daughters.
