Industry shocked by Westie comedian's unexpected passing.
TV3 and Four owner MediaWorks has tribute to "our friend and colleague Ewen Gilmour (51), who sadly died overnight. He was a much-loved and respected part of the wider MediaWorks family and had given generously of his immense talent over the years."
Mr Gilmour was filming at the broadcaster's Auckland studios last night for a comedy special, which has no on-air date at this time.
"He passed away at home. It was very unexpected as he had not been unwell but it was natural, he passed away in his sleep," Mr Gilour's agent Hillary Coe told media.
Counties Manukau Police said officers were called to the comedian's Port Waikato home at 6.15am.
The death appeared to be from natural causes, was not suspicious, Police said. It has been referred to the coroner.
John McDonald, Head of Local Production at MediaWorks TV, who had worked with Ewen many times over the years, paid tribute.
“Gilmour was mischievous, intelligent and warm-hearted. He set the standard for many of our young comedians to aspire to, with a knack for telling a wonderful, crazy, circular story that had fantastic gags all the way round. He’ll be hugely missed," Mr McDonald said.
"Our thoughts and best wishes are with Ewen’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time."
