Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee painted an upbeat picture of Christchurch’s rebuild last night.
He was talking to about 40 members of the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce annual meeting at the Court Theatre in Addington.
Mr Brownlee spoke about recent economic data showing growth in Canterbury and highlighted projects such as the Central Plains Water irrigation scheme that will be helped by a management team from troubled Solid Energy.
He talked about the initiatives of the Central City Redevelopment Unit that have been reported recently, and paid tribute to fellow Christchurch MP Nicky Wagner.
Chamber chief executive Peter Townsend spoke enthusiastically about the business and employment opportunities ahead.
He announced a new board of directors, which largely resembles that of last year.
Mr Townsend said the election had been keenly contested. “I love the democratic process played out to the full.”
The board includes University of Canterbury vice-chancellor Rod Carr, retailer Richard Ballantyne, property owner Stephen Collins, travel businesswoman Robyn Galloway, David Halstead, Chris Pickrill, human relations specialist Scott McCrea and Hugh Lindo from law firm Duncan Cottrerill.
Life membership was conferred on public relations consultant and chamber vice-president Tracey Chambers; Ngai Tahu Property chief executive, Property Council president and joint chamber vice-president Tony Sewell; and Lyttelton Port Company chief executive Peter Davie.
