Westpac has set up a temporary business hub to help quake-stricken Christchurch businesses.

Prime Minister John Key welcomed the move.

"It is great to see Westpac offering this practical assistance to help local businesses continue their operations and maintain their relationships with suppliers and customers," he said.

"It also sends a strong message that Christchurch businesses, despite dealing with disruptive circumstances, are continuing to be viable."

The hub would able to cater for 70 small to medium sized businesses and be open for about 18 months.

Facilities would include office space and furniture; telecommunications, wireless networking and video-conferencing facilities; meeting rooms, a corporate lounge; and access to business support services, including legal and accounting advisors.
