Prime Minister John Key has today launched more than $1 million in business scholarships.

The scholarships, for up to $110,000 per person, would allow recipients to study at internationally-recognised business schools. Between 15 and 25 would be awarded annually.

Recipients would be selected from a shortlist drawn up by the prime minister and economic development minister.

Recipients would be able to choose which business programme they attend.

Applicants, or their company, would be expected to cover the rest of the costs.

"The aim is to build the capability of our businesses and help make New Zealand more internationally competitive. It is expected that applicants would come from firms looking to export more," Mr Key said.

Economic Development Minister Gerry Brownlee said applicants would come from a wide variety of businesses.

However the government hoped to see applicants from high priority areas such as dairy, food, high-value manufacturing and services and petroleum and minerals.

Applications close on September 19.

The inaugural awards were expected to be announced in December.
