Transport Minister Steven Joyce is set to require taxi drivers to have cameras in their cabs.
Mr Joyce told journalists this morning that he would be taking that recommendation to Cabinet very soon.
The decision follows recent attacks on taxi drivers including the killing of Hiren Mohini.
Mr Joyce previously said the Government would consider also requiring screens but that was not on the table now.
There are about 7000 cabs operating in New Zealand. Costs for safety measures would be passed on to customers -- and a ballpark figure of about 30 cents a trip has been suggested.
Using cameras had been successful in Australia.
A penalty regime would be set up for those who did not comply.
