Some good news for those in the fast lane who are stressed out and worried about getting cancer, the number one killer in New Zealand which strikes down around 22 people a day.

Two just-released British studies uncover a cheap and effective weapon in the fight against the dreaded disease.

Researchers found that taking an aspirin a day not only lowers the risk of dying by cancer by more than a third but also protects against it spreading.

One study found that aspirin cuts the risk of dying from cancer by 37 per cent if patients take it every day for five years while another found taking aspirin for three years reduces the risk by 23 per cent for men and 25 per cent for women.

It was also discovered that the chance of the cancer spreading was cut by 55 percent if patients have daily does of aspirin for at least six and a half years.

Its long been known that aspirin can be beneficial in preventing heart attacks and strokes, although it can have harmful side effects such as triggering ulcers and internal bleeding.

Because of this doctors say it should only be taken on medical advice.
