Cantabrians are being warned to watch out for fraudsters when Earthquake Commission (EQC) assessors call on owners of damaged homes this week.

Gerry Brownlee, the minister in charge of reconstruction, said today homeowners should make sure the person they were talking to was genuine.

"They may knock on your door in many cases but they may contact you by phone," he said.

"If someone contacts you by phone, don't give them your EQC number, ask them what your EQC number is. If they can't give it to you, hang up"

Mr Brownlee said he was "just issuing a caution" because over the weekend people had pretended to be insurance assessors.

"You always get the nutter brigade in these situations."
