Claims to the Earthquake Commission (EQC) for about 350 homes seriously damaged in the Canterbury quake have not been lodged but need to be before Saturday, Prime Minister John Key says.

The deadline is the cutoff point for claims to be lodged following the September 4 earthquake.

"Lodging a claim before the cutoff date is critical, it may take some time for EQC to assess claims but the cost of repairing the damage will be covered if a claim is lodged before cutoff date," Mr Key told reporters.

He had been advised there were about 350 homes with substantial damage that no claims had been lodged for.

On Friday EQC chief executive Ian Simpson said it had paid out $331 million in claims for damage to residential properties from the earthquake.

It had received 159,628 claims and had paid out on 38,650 of them.

The claims the commission had paid out on were made up of 22,532 building claims, 16,111 contents claims and seven minor land claims.
