About 40 business chief executives will hold a teleconference with Prime Minister John Key and Finance Minister Bill English this afternoon to discuss how to move on from the devastating Christchurch earthquake.

Mr Key said the meeting of chief executives from 40 major companies would be chaired by Fonterra boss Andrew Ferrier.

"Those chief executives are likely to either want to offer support or to give an indication of what's happening with their own organisation, what they are likely to do, how easily they can accommodate themselves," he told reporters.

The whole CBD is closed down affecting large companies.

"They are going to want to operate, the question is what happens to them and do they go and relocate in another part of the city for a while, can they accommodate themselves in another part of New Zealand for a while but then what happens to those people (staff).

"There's a lot of questions that need to be answered. Actually once we've moved passed the rescue and recovery phase, very quickly we will turn into obviously the core infrastructure but then people's livelihoods how they pay the bills."
