CERA accountant takes top award

Top honour to general manager of economic recovery Steve Wakefield.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority general manager of economic recovery Steve Wakefield is the country’s top chartered accountant.

He won the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountant's top gong in its annual Leadership Awards.

Mr Wakefield has worked with CERA since mid-2011 and was last night awarded the Crombie Lockwood 2012 Chartered Accountant of the Year.

Other winners include Ernst & Young 2012 Public Sector Chief Financial Officer of the Year, Paul Chambers of Meridian, and Westpac 2012 Outstanding New Member Award, Skye Daniels, group financial controller of Auckland University.

“Mr Wakefield is an exemplar of best-practice in accounting which this award recognises," NZICA chief executive Terry McLaughlin says.

"He’s led the development of CERA’s Economic Recovery Programme, has provided leadership and direction for numerous multi-million dollar client projects, is frequently on steering committees and project boards or governance teams, and is passionately committed to community work."

Mr Wakefield took leave of absence from his role as managing partner of Deloitte Christchurch to work with CERA.

Other awards included:

American Express 2010 Outstanding Service to Profession Award, Professor Tony van Zijl.

Best Annual Report by a Corporate Organisation: Telecom.

Best Annual Report by a Public Sector Organisation: New Zealand Superannuation Fund.

Best Annual Report by a Not-for-Profit Organisation: World Vision New Zealand.

Best Sustainability Reporting: Rotorua District Council.
