As SBS Bank embraces the modern world it has replaced its chairman of 21 years.

John Ward is the new chairman at SBS Bank (formerly Southland Building Society) after the retirement of Acton Smith.

Mr Ward has been on the board for 10 years. His other posts include chancellor of the University of Otago.

Another SBS board appointment announced today is Alec Neil, who was raised in Otago.

Mr Neil is one of the Environment Canterbury councillors sacked two years ago by then local government minister Nick Smith after allegations the council was dysfunctional, although a Wyatt Creech report rejected this accusation.

Mr Neil is a former National MP for Waitaki who works as a lawyer in Christchurch with Lane Neave.

The other SBS appointment was Jeff Walker, who takes the position of deputy chairman.
