China has stressed the importance of its relationship with New Zealand during bilateral talks, say MPs just returned from a visit there.

Deputy Speaker Lindsay Tisch, accompanied by MPs Tim Macindoe and Rajen Prasad, visited China last week at the request of Acting President Wu Bangguo, who is also the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

"By inviting a parliamentary delegation to visit the National People's Congress, Chairman Wu reinforced the importance he places on parliamentary exchanges," Mr Tisch said.

"During our meeting, he stressed the importance of China's relationship with New Zealand, and the consistency and continuity that parliamentary exchanges provide in strengthening this relationship."

The visit also gave the New Zealand delegation a chance to see Fonterra's first offshore dairy farm in China.

"Chairman Wu commented on the complementary nature of the trade which exists between our two countries, especially under the free trade agreement, and the Fonterra farm at Tangshan demonstrates the future of this relationship," Mr Tisch said.

The visit ended on Sunday.
