Telecom's networking division, Chorus, has announced it will wire a new development in Rotorua for both copper and fibre.
New cable used for the project supports both DSL and fibre based services through copper pairs and fibres which can deliver voice, broadband and high speed data services.
The dual wiring set up will mean the Royal Court Apartments on Hinemoa St (pictured) will be set to take a feed from whoever wins the local Crown fibre contract ... or to take advantage of VDSL2, a new type of copper technology that will soon be offered by Telecom Wholesale, which will offer fibre-like speeds – at least for those who live close enough to a roadside cabinet or phone exhcange (not a problem for the Royal Court, which is just across the street from an exchange).
Could this be the way of the future for all new developments?
May be, may be not.
A Chorus rep told NBR, ""This is a proof-of-concept trial which is designed to show us the deployment performance (cost, efficiency and performance) of the dual copper fibre cable versus other future proofing internal wiring options."
“It’s great that Chorus is future proofing the building with fibre as it’s a real selling point for this development” said Mr Kwok.
Most new homes and apartments continue to be wired for voice and low speed data services using the older 2-wire system, Chorus said, acting as a handbrak on broadband.
“Wiring up right the first time releases the broadband handbrake and could save home owners thousands of dollars in re-wiring costs” said Mr Beattie.
In all, Chorus will connect 75 apartments and 35 retail outlets with 7km of the new cable by the end of April next year.
VDSL2 is not scheduled for launch in Rotorua until June; ASL2+ will be offered in the interim.
