Christchurch overnight quake upgraded to 5.4

UPDATE 11am: GNS' GeoNet has now upgraded last night's aftershock to a magnitude 5.4 event. Readings now have the quake centred in in Halswell, 10km south of metropolitan Christchurch, not Akaroa as initially recorded.


Christchurch was struck by a sizable aftershock last night at 10.34pm. There were no reports of major damage, but power was briefly cut to some homes in the western suburbs.

The magnitude 5.3 tremor occured at a depth of 12km, with its epicentre 10 km west of Akaroa according to a GeoNet report.

It was followed by 10 smaller aftershocks during the night.
