Former Prime Minister Helen Clark will have an early 60th birthday party at home this week and will also use her visit to pick up two recently announced honours.

Tomorrow morning she will receive New Zealand's highest honour, the Order of New Zealand, at Government House in Auckland, and in the evening the University of Auckland will confer on her an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

The New Zealand Herald reported that on Sunday -- before heading back to her job running the United Nations Development Programme -- friends planned to throw her a 60th birthday party. Her actual birthday is February 26.

She will also appear before Parliament's foreign affairs, defence and trade select committee to talk about the UNDP's work.

Ms Clark has been in the region at a conference in Vanuatu and visiting Australia and Papua New Guinea.

She will meet Prime Minister John Key in Auckland on Thursday.
