During September, a weekend upgrade-gone-wrong took the Companies Office, and 13 other government websites, offline for five days.

The cause of that catastrophic outage has now been officially identified: a storage system fault.

An independent review by Deloitte was commissioned. The results have not been made public, but an insider with a security company that works with the MED told NBR it was process or human error to blame rather than a technical fault. The ministry "scored an own goal" with a muffed attempt to upgrade a SAN, or storage area network, causing the September 24-28 multi-site outage.

MED will attempt to apply a fix over Saturday and Sunday.

A swathe of websites will be taken offline as a new storage system is plugged in.

All MED website servcies will be offline from 4pm Saturday November 12 through to 9am Sunday November 13.

This outage will affect all online services on the following websites.

  • Companies Office
  • Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR);
  • Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR;
  • Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand;
  • Insolvency and Trustee Service;
  • G2B;
  • Radio Spectrum Management;
  • Motor Vehicle Traders Register; and
  • Societies and Trusts.

Fingers crossed, this time they'll all be back up on Monday.
