The government is giving $1 million to Scion Research Ltd so it can pilot a process that reduces sewage waste.
Environment Minister Nick Smith said today the company was developing innovative thermal oxidation technology that greatly reduced the amount of sewage treatment waste and cut greenhouse gas emissions.
The money is coming from the Waste Minimisation Fund and the Rotorua company will work with the disctrict council to pilot the new technology.
"Scion has named this project `Waste 2 Gold' as the thermal oxidation process also generates useable by-products," Dr Smith said.
