A survey of NZX-listed companies shows little relationship between pay for CEOs and returns for shareholders.

In 2009 researchers from the universities of Utah and Purdue looked at the relationship between the incentive pay of chief executives and the performance of their companies.

The finding?

“Firms that pay their CEOs in the top 10% of pay earn negative abnormal returns over the next five years
