A breakdown in the Fairfax Media computer system has cancelled publication of four daily newspapers.
Morning newspaper readers are without their daily fix in most of the South Island and the lower half of the North Island after a breakdown in the Fairfax Media computer system.
Publication of The Dominion Post (Wellington), The Press (Christchurch), Southland Times (Invercargill) and Timaru Herald was cancelled early this morning after it was decided the fault could not be fixed in time.
Only The Taranaki Daily News (New Plymouth) was published using a separate computer system.
A Stuff website report quotes Fairfax Media chief executive Allen Williams as saying the fault hit the main production system around 4.15pm yesterday and despite best efforts from IT staff, it was unable to be restored.
Press editor Andrew Holden said it was only the second time in the past few years The Press had lost an edition of the paper. In 2009, a fire in the press hall of the old city-centre building also stopped the paper going to print.
The Stuff report said the fault was expected to be fixed today and news stories were still available online.
Fairfax Media also owns afternoon daily newspapers in Hamilton, Palmerston North and Nelson.
