Contact Energy gained 3000 new power customers and 500 new gas customers in January from the month before.
The new sign-ups, released today in the company's January operational data, showed the power company's electricity numbers increased from 478,000 at December 31, 2009, to 481,000 at January 31.
The company had released a number of new pricing plans to attract customers, as well as door-to-door campaigns to get people to switch over, Contact spokesman Jonathon Hill said.
"We have never seen the level of retail competition as we have now. And we're just out there, competing hard for it," he told NZPA.
The company also a heightened profile due to the $600 million it had invested in three new developments around New Zealand -- two new power plants and an underground gas storage facility in New Plymouth.
"We're bringing a lot of money into the economy at a time when its hurting, and we're generating a high profile because of that," he said.
