Controversial reporter Jonathan Marshall is understood to have resigned from the Sunday Star-Times and has departed Fairfax offices with immediate effect.
He came to fame as a teenager working as a paparazzi photographer whose work on Mike Hosking's children led to the Supreme Court's Hosking v Runting decision.
Mr Marshall has worked at the Herald on Sunday, the Sunday News and the Sunday Star-Times.
In recent times Mr Marshall's reporting of Amanda and Mark Hotchin resulted in a high-profile and expensive legal spat between the former Hanover Finance boss and Fairfax Media.
