Fresh from surviving a Commerce Commission inquiry into its relationships with suppliers, the Countdown supermarket chain is adding cheap water to its dollar-a-loaf bread.

From tomorrow, Countdown supermarkets will bring down the price of water to less than 42c a bottle, with a new 600ml Signature Range 24-pack available for just $10.

Merchandise general manager Steve Donohue says the water will come from its Putaruru supplier, New Zealand Quality Waters.

“Bottled water is a staple in many Kiwi households and we want to provide the most competitive offer out there,” he says.

As well as dropping the price by more than 42%, the bottle has increased 20% from 500ml to 600ml.

New Zealand Quality Waters sources its water from the Putaruru Blue Spring and owner Ian Riley says the Countdown deal will enable it to expand the business and take on 14 more staff.

“We know this offer is going to be really popular with customers so we’ve also invested in new technology to produce our own bottles on site, and to have greater capacity and efficiency in our production,” he says.
