A campaign set up on crowdfunding website Indiegogo has so far raised €1,582,526 in an attempt to bail out the struggling Greek government.

This has been achieved in only five days but the campaign has only four days left to run and currently still registers as having raised 0% of its goal of €1.6 billion. The current amount, raised by over 90,000 contributors, represents less than one thousandth of the total amount aimed for.

Launched by Londoner Thom Feeney, the push is based on his calculation that Greece could be “sorted” if every European contributed €3. Unfortunately, it seems that he overestimated the willingness of citizens to donate via the platform. Furthermore, even if the colossal goal were to be reached, it would still represent less than half a percentage point of the total amount owed by the Greek government.

Feeney, a staunch austerity critic, wrote in the Guardian on Wednesday that he was “fed up with the dithering of our politicians” and that “the way to help a struggling economy is by investment and stimulus – not austerity and cuts.” He insisted to the BBC that the campaign, which rewards donors with postcards and wine, is “not a joke.”

It seems highly unlikely that anything will come of the project as a full refund has been promised if the €1.6 billion goal is not reached in five days’ time.
