IHG announced last week it would not rebuild the on the city leasehold land due to construction costs (the market for accommodation was arguably over supplied pre-earthquake).
The building, which marks the northwest gateway to the central business district, was controversial when it was built on the end of Victoria Square, because it restricted sunlight to the rest of the square.
There are no plans yet for the site. The new draft city rebuilding plan still designates the site for accommodation.
