New Zealand's longest serving woman MP, Dame Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan has died.

Mrs Tirikatene-Sulliovan was a Labour MP between 1967 and 1996 - and died on Wednesday after a short illness.

She's a past minister of tourism, associate social welfare and environment.

Minister Chris Finlayson says she was an inspiring leader of her people and a genuinely great New Zealander.
