The Government is looking at ways to dispose of more than 500,000 televisions sets when the switch to digital television is made, Environment Minister Nick Smith says.
His comments come after e-day collections netted a record 900 tonnes, or 77,000 items, of electronic waste from around the country.
The Government wanted to move to a year-round culture of recycling electronic waste, Dr Smith said in Parliament today.
In the meantime, the Environment and Economic Development Ministries were working on what to do with the 500,000 TVs, containing about 1000 tonnes of lead, when the digital switch over occurred.
"A key issue is the capital cost of the equipment to extract the lead from the glass."
One possibility was a joint programme with Australia, Dr Smith said.
