A "bomb" onboard a Qantas Auckland to Sydney flight was in fact part of the aircraft, police say.

Flight QF142 was turned back to Auckland about 90 minutes into its journey this morning after crew found what looked like a suspicious package.

After it landed back in Auckland, the 737-800 was evacuated and the police bomb squad was sent on board to investigate.

"The item turned out to be a part of the interior of the aircraft that is not normally visible," police said in a statement.

There was no immediate word on whether or how Qantas would compensate passengers.
