On February 23, InternetNZ - the body which controls “.nz” internet addresses, announced it would cut its wholesale pricing by 16%, effective July1.

InternetNZ president Frank March said the cuts were largely due to his organisation’s long-term goal to lower fees, but also said they would be helpful to New Zealand companies during the recession, making it a couple of bucks cheaper for them to buy or renew web addresses.

Mr March did not know if the cuts would be passed on by the 71 companies accredit to sell “.nz” internet addresses (eight control 65% of the market).

Yesterday, the highest-profile reseller, Domainz, was ambivalent.

Tony Smith, marketing manager at Melbourne IT, the Australian company that has owned Domainz since it was spun off from InternetNZ in 2003, told NBR:

“At the moment we are watching to see how the market reacts to the InternetNZ change before we make any moves.”

Poor show.

Domainz currently charges $176 to register a ".nz" domain for five years.

After July 1, InternetNZ will charge a wholesale fee of $15 per year for a ".nz" domain, down from the current $18.

If you’re a domain registrar that will pass on the InternetNZ wholesale cut, let NBR know. [UPDATE: SimpleName, which currently has rates from $34.90 a year, has pledged to pass on the cut.]
