Eight of the "most affected" local government authorities have signed up to the Government's proposed financial assistance package for leaky home owners.

The package involves the Government and councils each paying 25 percent of the cost of repairing a home. Home owners would be have to come up with the remaining 50 percent.

People who chose the package would not be allowed to sue the Government or local authority.

The scheme applies to leaky homes notified to the Department of Building and Housing within 10 years of being finished.

Prime Minister John Key said Auckland, North Shore, Waitakere, Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga, Rodney and Manukau had agreed to support the package.

The eight local authorities combined had around 90 percent of active leaky home claims, Mr Key said.

Their support gave the package "critical mass" to go ahead.

Work would now continue on the operational detail of the package and Local Government New Zealand would work with other local authorities -- not all of whom had time to reply by today's deadline, Mr Key said.
