Rawdon Christie is to join Petra Bagust on the couch on TV1’s Breakfast show.

TVNZ announced this morning the UK-born presenter will be the new co-host, in place of Corin Dann, who recently became TVNZ’s political editor.

Mr Christie hosts the Saturday edition of the show with Toni Street.

He is also a newsreader for Breakfast, Midday and the 4.30pm One News bulletin.

The new role will mean getting up at 4am, but the father of three young children says he is delighted to accept the job.

“I love hosting Saturday Breakfast, and so to be able to present Breakfast five days a week is, for me, the perfect job.

“I know the team well from reading the news, and filling in for Corin, and so I’m, very excited to be taking on such a prominent role with the show.”

London-born, Mr Christie began his journalism career with the BBC in Britain in 2000 on regional radio and television.

Mr Christie, whose aunt is movie star Julie Christie, first came to New Zealand in the 1990s, when he taught performing arts and worked as a sports coach for Kings School in Auckland.

He joined One News in 2003 and since then has hosted Agenda, worked on Close Up, hosted the New Zealand version of Dragon’s Den, and anchored TVNZ’s coverage of the two major Christchurch earthquakes.

TVNZ editor of Daily Programmes John Gillespie says he is very pleased to have Mr Christie in the full-time role.

“Rawdon has the kind of journalistic integrity, insight and personality that our viewers really enjoy,” he said.

Mr Christie takes up his new role on Breakfast on Monday, May 14.

His replacement on Saturday Breakfast will be announced in the coming weeks.
