Webb's reveals sale price.
UPDATED THURSDAY 4.30pm: The Ferrari went for $1.1 million to a New York bidder. A Webb's statement said the price was a New Zealand record for a car sold at auction. Guide pricing before the auction was $1.1 million to $1.4 million.
WEDNESDAY: An Italian sports car described as one of the most important and influential car designs of the twentieth century is probably heading off to a new home in the United Kingdom, despite not selling at auction yesterday.
Before the sale at Auckland auctioneers Webb's the 1963 Ferrari Lusso 250 was marketed with an estimated price of between $1.1 million and $1.4 but bidding reached only $950,000 and it failed to sell.
Webbs' managing director Neil Campbell said an overseas buyer was negotiating to buy the car and it would probably sell for slightly more than $1 million.
In its catalogue Webbs called the Lusso "Enzo's masterpiece" after its famed Italian designer Enzo Ferrari. It said the car was powered by the legendary Tipo 125 V12 engine which "immediately captured the Lusso as the absolute epitome of the 1960s Italian performance design".
Similar cars were once owned by movie stars such as Peter Sellars and Steve McQueen.
Mr Campbell said there was good international interest in the auction last night which included a 1955 Vincent Black Knight motorcycle which sold for $100,000. When it was released its British designer Phil Vincent called it the two-wheeled Bentley.
A Vincent Rapide motorcycle sold for $56,000 and the sale yesterday indicated that in the classic market $1 million was not a lot of money in a world recession, he said.
The auction featured 95 cars and classic motorcycles.
