Hanover Finance co-founder Eric Watson has broken his back in a skiing accident in the Swiss Alps.

Mr Watson, also owner of the Warriors rugby League team, is reported to be recovering following surgery and is in no danger of paralysis, Radio Live reported.

Mr Watson and Mark Hotchin co-founded the Hanover group of finance companies, which last year froze more than $550 million of investor money.

The Hanover assets were then sold to Allied Farmers in a controversial debt for equity swap in December.

The deal was valued at the time at $396 million.

However, Allied Farmers has since more than halved its value of the assets, which include property development projects in Queenstown Resort.
