New Zealand Golf Gazette editor Lance Murray is missing “in the rough” after allegedly scamming scores of unwary golfers.

Police are looking for the 63-year-old Orewa man after receiving a 120 complaints from people who paid him for golfing equipment or golf packages in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

Detective Simon Eckersley of the Waikato fraud squad told NBR ONLINE that in many cases the equipment was not delivered or the packages did not materialise.

He says Auckland’s Pupuke Golf Club had around 50 members who were victims of the alleged scam, which also included one case of a credit card being “double dipped”.

Mr Eckersley says he was in touch with Mr Murray by phone yesterday and is confident the missing man will emerge from his place of hiding and talk things over with the police soon.

“It appears he’s lying low in Auckland somewhere but he has indicated he will co-operate with us in due course.”

“It’s a bit of a debacle but we will sort it out,” he says.
