Coffee specialist Esquires is launching new-look cafés that will be introduced during 2015.
The franchise operation was founded in Vancouver in 1993 and expanded into New Zealand, Fiji, Ireland and North America.
The first New Zealand store opened in May 2002 and there are now more than 45 stores here.
In 2011, the franchise was acquired by Retail Food Group to add to its Evolution Coffee Roasters Group, Gloria Jeans, bb’s café, Brumby’s Bakery, Michel’s Patisserie, Crust Gourmet Pizza, Pizza Capers, Cafe2u and The Coffee Guy Brand Systems.
After 13 years trading in this country Esquires has carried out an audit and survey of 1300 customers, prompting it to re-think its existing model, says Andrew Morgan, general manager of café and bakery, Retail Food Group NZ.
The changes encompass franchisee systems, fitout, signage and the coffees.
Last week Esquires opened the doors of the first new Esquires café at Christchurch’s The Hub Hornby.

Esquires cafés continue to be owned and operated by individual franchisees.
As part of the revamp, Esquires has new coffee flavours with seasonal blends as well as an all-new food menu, including made-in-store items for the first time.
“We believe we’ve created something unique that will stand out in the crowded world of café chains; a playful, personality-filled space for people to take a moment and enjoy fantastic coffee and delicious menu,” Mr Morgan says in a press release.
“Change truly has been made at every level and we’re excited for Kiwis to experience the new Esquires.”
