Ewen Macdonald – found not guilty in July of murdering his brother-in-law Scott Guy – has been denied parole at his first Parole Board hearing.

Macdonald, represented by the late Wellington barrister Greg King on all charges, was sentenced to five years jail in September on separate charges of theft, intentional damage, wilful damage and arson.

In considering eligibility for parole the Parole Board counts time already spent in custody awaiting trial, in Macdonald's case from April 2011.

The board says the time spend in custody on the murder charge no longer applies but it does for the separate charges of theft, intentional damage, wilful damage and arson.

Having therefore been in custody for one-third of his five-year sentence – 20 months – Macdonald was eligible for consideration but parole was denied.
