Chris Abbott has been named as Vodafone's new general manger for public policy, replacing Hayden Glass.

Mr Abbot will be based in Wellington, and report to Vodafone's Auckland based GM for Corporate Affairs, Tom Chignell.

He arrives at the telco from TelstraClear, where he was GM for business and goverment and, before that, group regulatory manager.

Before TelstraClear, Mr Abbott worked as a chief advisor for the Commerce Commission. The watchdog and Vodafone frequently tangle over public policy and regulatory issues.

He holds a Master of Commerce degree from the University of Auckland, majoring in economics and marketing.

Mr Glass is heading overseas.

A Vodafone spokesman said he was currently "watching the World Cup."
