In other deal-a-day news, Facebook will start testing a local discount service that brings it into direct competition with daily deals providers such as Groupon, the Wall Street Journal has reported.
The service will be an extension of a service all ready in place, which offers deals to members who use Facebook Places to check in to a location. Those subscribing to the new service will be able to find deals on a particular page listing all local deals running at that time. Facebook has more than 500 million users, the Journal said.
The service will begin testing in Dallas, Austin, San Francisco and San Diego. Facebook has declined to comment whether their virtual currency, Facebook Credits, will be required for members to purchase deals. The company takes a 30% cut of revenue for Credits deals.
