Fairfax and APN to merge printing operations

New Zealand's two news giants are looking to economise.
Fairfax and APN are looking at ways to economise by potentially merging their printing operations.
Both companies have been discussing a joint venture for printing and distribution, however neither company is talking specifics and a deal is not guaranteed.
APN chief executive Brett Chenoweth told The Australian companies need to move with the times.
“The industry is changing. In a digital world it makes sense for media companies to look at infrastructure-light business models,” he told The Australian.
“We need to focus on content, editorial, sales and marketing through a range of different platforms.”
A similar situation exists in Australia where Fairfax and News Limited are considering a partnership to reduce costs.
In New Zealand the media landscape is dominated by Fairfax and APN.
Last week, CourierPost, Fairfax Media and Netlink announced a new partnership to distribute and deliver newspapers and magazines.
The partnership takes effect July 1 from when CourierPost will distribute Fairfax Sunday papers (Sunday Star-Times and Sunday News) nationwide and Netlink takes over magazine circulation distribution services for Fairfax’s magazines.
