The LA FBI says it has arrested a member of the hacker group LulzSec.

LulzSec is (in)famous for claiming responsibility for attacking Sony Pictures and newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch (where websites were altered to proclaim that Mr Murdoch was dead).

The group was also nominated for a Pwnie Award, in the category of Epic 0wnage, for hacking, and I quote, “everyone”, including Fox News, Nintendo, the US Senate, the CIA  and Bethesda.

The Los Angeles FBI said today it had arrested Cody Kretsinger, a member of LulzSec for his role in an extensive computer attack against Sony Pictures.  Mr Kretsinger is 23 and has the handle “recursion”.

The FBI said from May through to June, Sony Pictures’ computer systems were compromised by LulzSec, who used an SQL injection, a technique to exploit security vulnerabilities, to obtain confidential information.

The indictment charging Kretsinger alleged he used a proxy server and erased the hard drive of the computer used in the attack.

The indictment said LulzSec distributed the information by “posting the information on LulzSec’s website, and then announced the attack via its Twitter account.”

LulzSec is affiliated with Anonymous, members of which threatened to bring down the Department of Internal Affairs site in May.

If convicted, Mr Kretsinger faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
