Ralph Brayham, the one-time head of Telecom's retail broadband business, has taken a half-share of local marketing services company Consortium.

Paul Shale, previously sole director of Consortium, says Mr Brayham brings more than 20 years of corporate experience to the business - something rare in New Zealand advertising agencies.

Mr Brayham in 2010 quit Telecom New Zealand, where he behind the launch of Tivo, and he ran the online retailer Ferrit until its demise in 2009.

He also served as a director of YahooXtra (now Yahoo NZ).

An avid vinyl buff, he is also a director of the Real Groovy online record chain, owning one-third of the business, though he is not involved in its day-to-day running.

Consortium has operated since 2003, with clients including 42 Below, Charlie’s, Sony, Auckland University of Technology and Auckland International Airport.

Mr Shale says Mr Brayham will bring a business acumen to the business which will set it apart from others.

“This will make for a more commercial business proposition, merging with traditional advertising and planning. We think we can create new ways to strategically plan communications.”

“Mr Brayham has a lot of corporate structure [in his background] and he’s way more organized than many I have seen,” Mr Shale explained.

This won’t make Consortium any less creative, he said, but would lead to more commercially-focused creativity at the full-service agency.

Clients have welcomed the new arrival.

“Consortium has been central to our sustained success as New Zealand’s fastest-growing university,” said Vivien Bridgewater, general manager, university relations, for AUT University.

“They have continually delivered more than just ads and I think this evolution represents further evidence of the business beliefs that lie at the core of their brand.

"We wish them all the best and look forward to working with Consortium 2.0,” she said.
