Today’s migration figures show 1200 people landed in New Zealand for a RWC-related holiday.
Those 1200 did not though prevent overall tourism numbers from falling: they merely stopped the fall being quite so large.
Overall tourism numbers were 176,100 in July, down 4%.
The main increases, by country of destination, were from China, up 1700. The other main sources recorded falls in numbers - 3100 fewer Australians, 2100 fewer Japanese, 1500 fewer US, and 1100 fewer UK tourists.
UK visitors have declined almost every month since April 2007, and the 10,200 visitors from the United States were the lowest for a July since 1993 – although US visitors have increase five of the past 12 months.
Numbers arriving for holidays have fallen, down 9900, but people travelling for business rose 1900, while those coming for conferences and conventions increased by 1400.
