Former Telecom Wholesale boss Matt Crockett is in the running for the top job at APN, the AFR reports.
Mr Crockett - an Australian - left Telecom NZ in 2010. He joined APN as chief operating officer in 2011 after taking 11 months out.
The AFR says internal candidates also include Australian newspaper head Warren Bright.
The Sydney-based APN owns an outdoor advertising business, and several media properties including, on this side of the Tasman, the NZ Herald, NZ Magazines and The Radio Network.
Under Mr Crockett, Telecom Wholesale was known for aggressive deal-making.
The Australian also represented Telecom on the board of Southern Cross Cable, where he went on the front foot with his attacks on Pacific Fibre, and is a former director of Orion Health.
