A free auction has seen an original hospice home sell for $830,000 above its rateable value.

The Hospice West Auckland property in Woodford Ave sold last weekend for $1.4 million. Its rateable value was $570,000.

Harcourts Blue Fern sales manager Cynthia Sherwood says the new owner refuses to be named and wishes to stay out of the media spotlight.

The auction of the six-bedroom house was held free of commission and all advertising for the sale was donated.

The free services totalled $56,000. This included photography, advertising space and commission.

The auction also received editorial support coverage from NBR.

Miss Sherwood says about 100 people showed up for the auction.

Harcourts national auction manager Robert Tulp says the interest created from marketing led to an active bidding war between eight or nine interested parties.

"I think it’s fair to say the end result exceeded all expectations. The bidders were well drilled and adopted various bidding strategies.”

Hospice West Auckland chief executive Barbara Williams says the money comes at a important time because the hospice wants to expand to include in-house facilities for people requiring more intensive care.

The property was occupied by Plunket, which had been there since the Hospice outgrew the space and moved to a larger building six years ago.

The land was originally gifted to the Hospice in 1988 by then Waitakere mayor Tim Shadbolt.
